Hungary’s right to decide its own fate is at stake, Miklós Szánthó of the Center for Fundamental Rights said, warning that foreign powers seek to draw the country into conflict. He stressed that, unlike in the past, Hungarians now have a choice—to preserve peace and act in their own national interest.

The following is the English translation of a press release kindly provided to us by the Center for Fundamental Rights.

‘The Brussels empire is now acting through an eastern proxy, seeking to drag us into an impending World War III via Kyiv,’ Director General of the Center for Fundamental Rights Miklós Szánthó stated ahead of the roundtable discussion titled The Forgotten Victims of World War II, organized by the International Association of Gulag and GUPVI Researchers.

He noted that while the setting may change, the fundamental question remains the same: do we make decisions based on Hungary’s national interests, or do we once again carry out the will of others?

According to Director Szánthó, the cast of actors is all too familiar. Foreign power centres have long maintained their networks in the country, but today they influence public opinion through more sophisticated tools—NGOs, pressure groups, and powerful algorithms. He emphasized that during the global conflicts of the 20th century, Hungarians had no say; they were never asked whether they wished to fight for others’ geopolitical goals or become a battleground for foreign interests.

Today, however, there is a choice—and that is precisely what is at stake on 12 April.

As Szánthó put it, the question is whether Hungary can preserve peace, and whether its children will have a future in their own country—or whether they will once again be sacrificed to serve foreign interests. In his view, Hungary’s grand strategy remains unchanged: consistently representing national interests, staying out of other nations’ wars, and resisting all forms of external pressure.

‘Let us listen to the silence of those who never returned. And when election day comes, let us decide in a way that ensures future generations will no longer have to pay the price for others’ ambitions for power,’ Szánthó warned.
