Ukrainian independent journalist and blogger Myroslav Oleshko shared a lengthy post on the social media site X on Friday, 6 March, in which he details why he supports Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary in his fight against the ‘usurper and autocrat’ president of his home country, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
‘Today, Zelenskyy has effectively usurped power in Ukraine. He persecutes his critics, arrests political opponents, and uses mobilization as a tool of repression. People are sent to war where they die, while none of Zelenskyy’s close associates or friends is mobilized or fighting.
At the same time, Zelenskyy and his friends profit from the war. Many of his friends and business partners today are connected to the defence industry, particularly to the production of drones and missiles. This is why Zelenskyy is not interested in ending the war quickly,’ Oleshko wrote on X.
Myroslav Oleshko on X (formerly Twitter): “I am a Ukrainian, an independent Ukrainian blogger and journalist. On the matter of Hungary, he stated in his post: ‘I am grateful to Hungary for providing protection to Ukrainian citizens. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are leaving their country today. And often they do so not only because of Russian missiles, but also because of fear of the actions of their own authorities and the system of forced mobilization…There must be real diplomacy between Ukraine and Hungary, not the language of banditism used by Zelenskyy.’
By ‘language of banditsim’, Oleshko is referring to a recent statement by President Zelenskyy, in which he said that he would ‘give the address’ of PM Orbán to his soldiers if he continues to block the European Union’s proposed €90 billion aid package to his country.
The Ukrainian independent journalist also criticized Zelenskyy for refusing to hold elections or voluntarily resign from office. President Zelenskyy’s first five-year term was supposed to end in May 2024. However, due to the war conditions, the presidential election was postponed by the Ukrainian government. He also claims that President Zelensky is routinely imprisoning his critics.
Oleshko is one of the journalists under prosecution by the Zelesnkyy administration.
His X bio reads ‘A blogger whom Zelenskyy wants to put in pre-trial detention for eight years for criticizing the government.’ The same bio also claims that he is currently based in Ukraine. That is very unlikely to be the case, even though X’s new geolocation feature does mark him as operating from ‘Eastern Europe (Non-EU) App Store’.
According to 2023 information by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Oleshko, he is being accused by the government of falsifying medical documentation to avoid the draft. The SBU also claims that he has illegally fled the country.
