US President Donald Trump gave his enthusiastic endorsement to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary in the 2026 Hungarian parliamentary election, in which he called him ‘a strong leader with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results’. Six out of eight candidates or referendum options that have received President Trump's endorsement outside the US ended up winning their respective elections.

The 2026 Hungarian parliamentary elections are just a little over two months away. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is running for his fifth consecutive and sixth overall term as a member of the right-wing Fidesz Party.

Now, he has secured a major endorsement: from none other than the 45th and 47th President of the United States, Donald J Trump.

This is hardly a surprise, however. The two statesmen have had a famously close relationship. PM Orbán visited President Trump in the White House during both of his non-consecutive terms, in May 2019 and November 2025. While President Trump was out of office, Orbán met with him at his Mar-a-Lago estate two more times. In a more recent encounter, PM Orbán represented Hungary at the ceremonial foundation of the Board of Peace in Davos, Switzerland in January 2026. The Board of Peace is President Trump’s new international initiative.

On Thursday, 5 February, President Trump posted to his own social media platform, Truth Social:

‘Highly Respected Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, is truly a strong and powerful Leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results. He fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America.

Viktor works hard to Protect Hungary, Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Migration, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER! Relations between Hungary and the United States have reached new heights of cooperation and spectacular achievement under my Administration, thanks largely to Prime Minister Orbán…I was proud to ENDORSE Viktor for Re-Election in 2022, and honored to do so again. Viktor Orbán is a true friend, fighter, and WINNER, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Hungary—HE WILL NEVER LET THE GREAT PEOPLE OF HUNGARY DOWN!’

Prime Minister Orbán has responded to the glowing endorsement on X, with a brief message of gratitude to the POTUS.

The Hungarian head of government was among the earliest supporters of President Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign, even at a time when many inside the Republican Party strongly opposed it. President Trump constantly talked about Prime Minister Orbán’s endorsement of him on the campaign trail. It was very unusual for a US presidential candidate to talk that much about a foreign leader.

President Trump’s Track Record of International Endorsements

The majority of candidates and one referendum option that have received President Trump’s formal endorsement outside the United States have won their respective elections.

The list of eventual winners endorsed by Trump is: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, President Nasry Asfura in Honduras, President Karol Nawrocki in Poland, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Hungary in 2022, Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the United Kingdom; as well as the Leave option in the 2016 referendum on EU membership in the United Kingdom.

There have been only two cases where the candidate lost despite President Trump’s endorsement: President Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil in 2022 (who has since also been imprisoned), and Prime Ministerial candidate Giuseppe Conte in Italy.
