US President Donald Trump has endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for the 2026 parliamentary election, expressing full confidence that he will outperform his 2022 result. Speaking at the Gaza peace deal signing in Egypt, Trump called Orbán ‘fantastic’ and said the US stands ‘100 per cent behind’ Hungary’s leader.

US President Donald Trump has endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, expressing confidence that he will perform ‘even better’ in the 2026 parliamentary election than he did in 2022, when Trump also backed him.

‘We love Viktor…You are fantastic,’ Trump said during the signing ceremony of the peace agreement ending the Gaza war in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday. ‘I know a lot of people don’t agree with me, but I’m the only one that matters. You are fantastic,’ the president continued. Trump added that ‘we’re behind you 100 per cent,’ noting that Hungary will hold its election in 2026 and that Orbán is ‘going to do great, even better’ than in 2022—the last time Trump endorsed him.

Viktor Orbán has been one of Donald Trump’s closest allies in Europe since the latter entered politics in 2016. Orbán was the first European leader to endorse Trump ahead of his first presidential victory, and the two share remarkably similar views on the geopolitical and ideological challenges facing the world today. Both Orbán and Trump have consistently advocated for peace in Ukraine and Gaza since the wars began, and the Hungarian prime minister has voiced high hopes for Trump’s peace efforts regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

‘The guns have fallen silent, the hostages are free, and long-awaited peace reigns in the Middle East,’ Orbán wrote on X after the signing ceremony. ‘Now it’s Europe’s turn. President Trump’s success proves that we must never give up on negotiations. Without talks, there is no peace,’ he continued, adding that ‘it’s time for us Europeans to follow President Trump’s example!’

Hungary is now in a tense campaign period as the country heads towards its parliamentary election in April 2026. Earlier in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin also endorsed Viktor Orbán, stating that the majority of Hungarians want to remain Hungarian and therefore will support Orbán.
