Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán condemned the ‘henious sexual assault’ by three Moroccan migrants on two young Hungarian women in Catania, Italy, in a post on X on 9 September. Orbán thanked Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini for taking a stand by the victims and blamed the European Commission’s migration policy for the incident.
‘Their failed policy led to this attack. This sexual assault lies on the conscience of the Brussels bureaucrats,’ Orbán wrote, urging for ‘rebellion’ against Brussels’ policies.

Italian police arrested three Moroccan over the weekend in Catania province, Sicily, after two Hungarian tourists reported being sexually assaulted by them while travelling in the region. According to reports by Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the two Hungarian women had spent the day at the beach before attempting to return to their accommodation. Two men approached them and offered a ride back. Instead of driving them to their lodging, the suspects took them outside the city and began harassing them.
At a secluded location, a third man joined them. He allegedly forced the women to consume cocaine while all three continued to molest them against their will. Despite their repeated refusal, the abuse continued throughout the drive.
The suspects, aged 21, 22, and 24, were taken into custody by officers from Catania’s police department. They are all Moroccan nationals and, according to the authorities, were residing illegally in Italy. Following the arrest, prosecutors ordered their transfer to the Piazza Lanza prison in Catania. A judge has since validated the arrest and placed them under pre-trial detention.

Speaking to Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet, the League’s—Salvini’s party—representative in the Sicilian Regional Assembly, Vincenzo Figuccia, expressed his sympathy to the Hungarian victims and to the Hungarian people as a whole. He said Sicilians are fed up with illegal immigrants. They find it shameful that they cannot ensure proper security either for locals, or for the tourists and workers visiting the island.
He went on to highlight that the island’s residents are frustrated with the European Union’s illogical immigration policies. ‘They are tired of the EU trying to turn Sicily into a refugee camp,’ he said.
On the issue of sexual assault, he stressed that offenders who violate Hungarian girls or any other women must face the harshest penalties. He added that the League is pushing for chemical castration for anyone convicted of sexual violence.
Orbán has recently wrote a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urging Brussels to cover the costs of Hungary’s border protection instead of punishing the country for its stance against illegal migration.
