Two Serbian men have been arrested on suspicion of drug possession at the Hungarian side of the Hungarian–Serbian border, in the village of Röszke, the Csanád-Csongrád County branch of the Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) informed the national news agency MTI on Monday, 12 May.
Five kilograms (11 pounds) of heroin and methamphetamine, two highly addictive drugs, were seized. The suspects kept the contraband in plastic bags inside containers, which were hidden underneath the driver’s seat. A chemical test was conducted on the scene, and the substances were immediately identified. The suspects most likely tried to smuggle the drugs across the border to sell them into the Hungarian illegal drug trade.
NAV even shared a video of the arrest on their Facebook page.
Another Serbian man was also apprehended during the border patrol stop at the country’s southern border.
He tried to hide under the backseat of the vehicle, but the freshly taped upholstery proved to be ‘talkative’, and the authorities found a total of eight bags containing more than 200 grams of the drug and a separate container with an additional 11 grams of suspected illegal drugs, which the police identified as cocaine derivatives. The drivers were detained on suspicion of drug possession, MTI shared, referring to information provided to them by NAV.
