The Hungarian Prime Minister travelled to Doha on Sunday, where he is taking part in an official visit upon the invitation of Qatar’s Prime Minister. Viktor Orbán also delivered a speech at the Qatari Economic Forum upon the invitation of the Qatari Emir.  In his remarks, the PM declared that the war in Ukraine will not end

unless the United States and Russia reach an agreement.

The PM also gave an interview to Bloomberg at the forum, in which he nailed down that Ukraine cannot win the war against Russia, and confirmed that Hungary will continue to oppose EU aid and further sanctions. He also stressed that the Hungarian nation supports the Ukrainian people ‘wholeheartedly’, and is aware of the suffering Ukrainians are going through. However, as a politician he must focus on saving lives, he stressed, noting that more effort should be invested on the part of the international community to reach a ceasefire.

The Prime Minister also said that it is a ‘matter of principle’ that

if the Ukrainians want EU money, they should not put Hungarian companies on blacklists,

referring to the case of OTP Bank which has recently been officially designated as a ‘war sponsor’ by Kyiv.

In a video posted to his Facebook page on Monday, Viktor Orbán talked about the lengthy, exhaustive, and successful negotiations he had with the leader of the country. ‘In the past year, we have learned that Qatar is a key country for Europe. The European economy has replaced a substantial part of the missing Russian gas with LNG gas coming from here,’ added the Prime Minister.  Viktor Orbán emphasised that Qatar is a country with outstanding economic performance, present in every part of the world. Furthermore, it is part of the peace camp, ‘interested in bringing the Russo-Ukrainian war to a swift conclusion and is willing to play a role of mediator in the peace negotiations.’

According to the Prime Minister’s briefing, an agreement has been reached on energy cooperation. ‘We will also purchase gas from here because it is always better to have multiple sources rather than relying on a single one,’ he stated. ‘We agreed on infrastructure development, airport development, cooperation in the communication industry, and even made agreements in agriculture. A good perspective has opened up for Qatari-Hungarian economic cooperation,’ Viktor Orbán declared.
