Denmark’s right-wing Danish People’s Party (DF) has more than tripled its support in Tuesday’s snap election, called by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to consolidate power—a plan that ultimately backfired. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán hailed the result as further proof that ‘patriots are gaining ground across Europe’.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced that Hungary will halt gas supplies to Ukraine in response to Kyiv’s continued blocking of oil transit through the key Druzhba pipeline since 27 January. The remaining volumes will be stored domestically to strengthen Hungary’s reserves.
The European Commission has demanded ‘clarification’ from Hungary after reports alleged that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó leaked confidential EU discussions to Moscow, as election-related information warfare intensifies. The claims emerged days after Brussels activated its DSA rapid response system, which the government called a ‘coordinated operation’.
‘According to the report under the (in force) EU regulation, media platforms are required to identify and “mitigate” systemic risks. That is, not only illegal speech…is moderated online, but speech that the European Commission and its network of civil society actors deem to pose a “systemic risk”.’
Protesters gathered outside Ukraine’s embassy in Budapest after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directed an open threat at Viktor Orbán over his blocking of the €90 billion EU loan to the war-torn country. Demonstrators, joined by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, accused Kyiv of political pressure and interference in Hungary’s election.
Hungarian authorities detained seven Ukrainian citizens transporting tens of millions of dollars, euros, and gold through the country in what officials called the ‘Ukrainian gold convoy operation’. Kyiv reacted sharply, warning its citizens against travelling to Hungary and accusing Hungarian authorities of illegally detaining the individuals.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy bluntly claimed that Ukraine has no intention whatsoever of restarting oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline, placing Hungarian and Slovak energy security in serious jeopardy. Viktor Orbán responded by calling on the European Commission to enforce treaty obligations on Kyiv.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has ordered reinforced protection of Hungary’s critical energy infrastructure, citing intelligence reports of possible Ukrainian sabotage. The move comes amid escalating tensions over the Druzhba pipeline and accusations that Kyiv is using energy pressure to interfere in Hungary’s upcoming election.
Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar announced that he will head Tisza’s national list in April, formalizing what had long been obvious after nearly two years as the party’s sole public voice. Stating that he is ready to serve Hungary, Magyar and Tisza are deeply integrated into the EU establishment and are expected to align with it on issues such as Ukraine’s accession and migration.
Behind closed doors in Zagreb, the European People’s Party outlined a vision for Europe that would dilute national sovereignty and turn the EU into an increasingly militarized organization anchored to long-term commitments for Ukraine. With Viktor Orbán standing as the main obstacle to this agenda, it is hardly surprising that Brussels is now heavily invested in unseating him ahead of Hungary’s April election.
At a time when public debate is increasingly polarized and superficial, Hungarian Conservative remains committed to depth and independent thought.
