Euronarcissism Serves No One

‘Yes, it is true that many Americans cannot quote Goethe from memory. It is also true that most self-employed American tradesmen outperform European middle-class workers by a significant margin.’

I loathe the phrase ‘the left are the real racists’. Not only does it buy into this whole liberal notion that one’s personal beliefs are more important than their concrete, day-to-day actions, but it also feeds this tired, culture-war discourse that we should really be moving on from now.

That being said—Man, you will not find a greater set of racial supremacists than the Brussels elite.

I’m not going to call them racist. Such name-calling is below me, and below the Right more generally. What I will say is that their collective inflated ego is beyond belief. There is a reason the European Commission is absolutely obsessed with ‘taking the lead’ on moral issues, such as climate change and ‘human rights’.

It’s because they think all the other peoples of the world are utter morons.

And yes, that includes the populations of the United States and China.

This notion is laughable, of course. America has dominated Europe economically, politically, socially and scientifically for at least a century now. The Chinese, meanwhile, have gone from a century of humiliation to calling the shots when making deals with their European counterparts. The EU could not hope to call itself a peer of either.

‘America has dominated Europe economically, politically, socially and scientifically for at least a century now’

Not that they want to. No, the Europeans think themselves superior to both. In the pubs and restaurants surrounding the EU institutions, jokes at the expense of dumb Americans are common, as are belittling words castigating the environmental costs of Chinese industry. No, both countries are inferior to the Brussels class. Neither population can quote Goethe, after all.

Such notions do not actually hurt China or the United States, of course. Well, not majorly. The Digital Services Act, after all, came out of this unfounded sense of ethnic superiority held by European bigwigs, with the legislation now being used to censor American speech and damage American companies. But the primary victims of such views are Europeans themselves. After all, if you cannot admit you have been overtaken by your former geopolitical rivals, what hope do you have of ever wanting to change?

I refuse to call this racism. It’s just too weak a slur at this stage. I prefer the term ‘ethnonarcisism’, or maybe ‘Euronarcissism’. It is a mental pathology that has plagued the continent for quite a long time now, the condition only becoming more chronic by the day.

This is not a Liberal or left-wing problem. Euronarcissism is most certainly common amongst those aligned with the so-called ‘Grand Coalition’ of Europe, yes. But it’s just as present on the Right. The castigation of other nations, friend and enemy alike, is common amongst the European Right, with many on this continent holding onto a feeling of superiority that is utterly unfounded in reality.

Yes, it is true that many Americans cannot quote Goethe from memory. It is also true that most self-employed American tradesmen outperform European middle-class workers by a significant margin. These US electricians, plumbers and self-employed truckers will also frequently have a more solid faith, a more tight-knit community, and a better practical base of skills than the Europeans who may mock them.

What do Europeans have? Sure, there are numerous cathedrals and great buildings dotting our continent that are many centuries older than the United States, and most certainly China’s current communist iteration. But were these really built by us? They were build by our ancestors, but have we truly done anything to maintain them? To build on them? To ensure they will be enjoyed by our children or grandchildren? Hell, will there even be enough basic housing and healthcare facilities for our progeny? Will there even be anything built by our ancestors left when it comes time for them to take the reins of this sick land?

‘We have fundamentally failed as a continent’

The EU is a mess. It’s not just immigration, or progressivism. We have fundamentally failed as a continent on the issues of trade, manufacturing, energy, scientific innovation, job creation, housing, infrastructure and a host of other areas. This trend only seems to be accelerating, with even areas EU countries used to dominate in—such as the car market—being gobbled up by China and the United States as the world goes electric. And rather than use this moment as a wake-up call to our failures, so many of us self-isolate via a false notion of supremacy. That these younger nations don’t really know what they are doing, and that they will never have the pure culture that we supposedly enjoy here.

It’s a coping mechanism. One that is based on pure fiction. The rest of the world is accelerating while we stagnate in our own sense of importance.
