An asylum seeker is on the run after the body of American-born woman Jamey Carney, 43, was found at her Killarney home on Tuesday, 7 July, in Ireland. The Gardaí have launched a murder investigation into the case, with media reports saying authorities are looking for a Middle Eastern man ‘known to’ the victim.
The Irish Sun, Irish Mirror, and Gript all reported that the man had lived at an IPAS (International Protection Accommodation Service) centre and had been in Ireland since 2024. Gardaí have not confirmed his immigration status, age, name, or nationality. A post-mortem examination has also been completed, but authorities have withheld the results for operational reasons.
Carney was originally from Westchester County, New York, and moved to Killarney in 2021 with her teenage daughter. She had Irish ancestry, with reports saying two of her grandparents were from Kerry, southwestern county of Ireland, where Killarney is located. Locals described her as well-liked, sociable, hard-working, and a devoted mother. Regarding her background, the Irish Examiner reported that she campaigned for Palestinian rights and was involved in local sport, while TheJournal.ie described her as a healthcare worker employed by a US-and-Ireland-based telehealth and outsourcing company.

Social media reporting has also claimed, judging by content shared by the victim online, that Carney was a liberal, pro-Palestine, anti-ICE activist who reportedly met the suspect during an anti-war demonstration. According to Europa.com, Carney shared several posts with her alleged murderer, showing them travelling together and seemingly in a relationship.
A review of the victim’s still-publicly available Facebook profile shows that these claims are accurate. Many pictures, including her profile photo and recent posts, show Carney, a brown-skinned, Arab-looking man and, in some cases, her daughter posing together with their dog. ‘Soon inshallah’, read the caption to a 24 June photo depicting the couple with a Palestinian flag in the background. The man’s profile is also available and can be found through the comment section of one of Carney’s posts. In a post from November 2025, he is shown sitting in a park, with the background resembling a typical Irish town.
Investigators believe Carney died violently inside her rented home in the Homeland estate. Her body was found by a family member, covered with a sheet, on her bed. She suffered head injuries in what appeared to be a serious assault, and an argument had reportedly been overheard in the house the night before she was found. Her body was removed from the scene on Wednesday as technical examinations continued.
A manhunt is now under way for the man to Carney, described as a ‘significant person of interest’ in the investigation. Ports and airports have been placed on alert amid fears he may try to leave Ireland, while the Police Service of Northern Ireland has also been notified about the case. The man being sought is reportedly in his late 20s or early 30s, originally from the Middle East, and had spent time in France before coming to Ireland.

The case sparked immediate backlash online, with many users pointing to its grim political irony and presenting the victim as a textbook example of ‘suicidal empathy’—a Western white woman sympathetic to progressive causes, dating an immigrant who later allegedly became her killer. In other words, she was murdered by someone from the very category of people she politically defended.
The killing has shaken Killarney, where local councillors urged anyone with information to come forward. The scene, Carney’s home on Muckross Road, remains preserved as the investigation continues, with authorities appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or other footage from the area between 11pm on 6 July and 5am on 7 July.
