The Patriots’ Freedom and Democracy Committee, also known as the Freedom Shield, undertook a three-day fact-finding mission to Poland. During the visit, the Committee examined the measures implemented by the Donald Tusk government, engaging directly with affected parties, including representatives of constitutional, legal and civil society organizations, hearing their individual testimonies first-hand.
The measures introduced by the Tusk government raise serious concerns about its commitment to the rule of law, the smooth functioning of democratic institutions, media pluralism and freedom of speech. The number of unlawful actions is so extensive that it is difficult to recount them all, but several ‘highlights’ stand out. After taking office in 2023, the Polish government began systematically undermining the work of judges and prosecutors. Justice Minister Adam Bodnar dismissed the state prosecutor, Dariusz Barski, a move that was later declared illegal by both the Polish Supreme Court and the Constitutional Tribunal. Nevertheless, the government refuses to acknowledge multiple rulings from these institutions and continues to govern in open defiance of their authority. The President of the Constitutional Tribunal went so far as to file a notification warning of a possible coup d’état. Yet only seven days later, the deputy prosecutor who had launched an investigation into this matter was abruptly suspended from his duties.

In addition, the government has deliberately obstructed the process of filling judicial vacancies, leaving hundreds of positions unfilled. Judges appointed after 2018 under the previous government, who have been labelled as ‘neo-judges’, have been reassigned to lower positions and demoted from handling significant cases. These practices have gravely undermined the independence of the courts and the judiciary as a whole.
It is worth recalling that one of the government’s first actions was the illegal and forceful takeover of Poland’s state media. In addition, former Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski, who has since been granted asylum in Hungary, was detained without the immunity to which he was entitled. We also heard shocking testimonies about the arrest of two former Polish civil servants, who were subjected to inhumane treatment—in cases where the Polish Ombudsman repeatedly found that the authorities had acted unlawfully.
A campaign has also been launched against organizations that seek to promote family-friendly values and oppose LGBTQ ideology, carried out through intimidation and financial strangulation.
Can one imagine Brussels’s reaction if even a fraction of these measures were implemented in Hungary? Yet, Brussels remains conspicuously silent, turning a blind eye, day after day. A particularly striking irony is that the European Commission’s recent Rule of Law Report praises Poland for making progress on the functional independence of prosecutors. This is nothing short of extraordinary.
This is a textbook example of double standards, and it seriously undermines the integrity and credibility of the European institutions. It sends a dangerous message that the EU’s alleged defence of the rule of law is not about principles, but a political and ideological weapon used to punish and threaten governments that refuse to align with the mainstream globalist Brussels agenda.

Signs suggest that Brussels is seeking to replicate the ‘Tusk model’ in Hungary by installing a puppet government which serves its own agenda. The aim of the EU leadership is clear: to override the democratic will of the Hungarian people and eliminate our sovereigntist government. If they succeed, Hungary would likely not be the last—one by one, other Member States would surely follow.
We will not allow this to happen. The Hungarian government is determined to resist any attempt by Brussels to impose a political scenario that prioritizes foreign interests at the expense of national sovereignty. This is what is truly at stake in next year’s election: a choice between a sovereign government that acts in the interests of the Hungarian people or a puppet administration carrying out Brussels’s will.
As Patriots, we are resolute in raising our voices in defence of national sovereignty and the rule of law at every European forum, exposing the glaring double standards that Brussels continues to apply.
