2022 Midterms: Kyiv Dreads Republican Victory

Politicians of the Republican Party would like to see the belligerents to come to an agreement as soon as possible and the bloodshed that has been going on for eight months to finally come to an end.

The American mid-term elections are closely followed in Ukraine, as their results matter a lot to them: several Republican representatives would rather force peace talks instead of unrestrained money and arms deliveries.

The 2022 United States midterm elections held on Tuesday, 8 November 2022, are particularly important with regard to the Russia-Ukraine war. The policy of the Democratic Party is well-known: they help Ukraine with every step they take, and, in effect, constantly pour arms and other donations into the country.

However, politicians of the Republican Party may put an end to this process, as they wish the belligerents to come to an agreement as soon as possible and the bloodshed that has been going on for eight months to finally come to an end. For example, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican member of the House of Representatives, said in her latest campaign speech that Biden and his party are only interested in Ukraine, and not in the United States.

In her speech in Sioux City, the politician stated that the Democrats have opened the borders wide, but ‘the only border they care about is Ukraine, not America’s southern border’.

‘Under Republicans, not another penny will go to Ukraine. Our country comes first,’

declared Greene.

Ohio senatorial candidate James David Vance has a similar opinion, who, although not so openly, said that this game cannot be played forever by the current leadership, and

Ukraine’s cash flow must be cut off.

J. R. Majewski, another Republican candidate running for a House seat, has also criticized the Biden administration for cutting billion-dollar checks to Kyiv during a time of inflation in their own country.

According to The Washington Post’s commentary, there is a sharp turn in the rhetoric of the Republicans, since earlier almost all members of the party had stood up for helping Ukraine, but now Trump supporters, politicians sceptical of military intervention and anti-Biden members of Congress have come together to put pressure on legacy, traditionally centrist Republicans.

However, this resulted in a fissure in the Republican Party, which is likely to deepen if Republicans retake Congress and are faced ‘with forceful requests from Biden and emotional appeals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,’ the commentator wrote.

According to Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy, it is no longer possible to write blank checks to Ukraine in the current economic situation. He sharply criticized Washington for not dealing with the protection of American borders, which Americans are quite aware of now.

‘Ukraine is important, but it cannot be the only thing the government deals with,’

he said.

McCarthy went on to say that he would personally continue to support Kyiv, but the ways in which assistance in granted must be reformed and Ukraine must be thoughtfully supported in the fight against the Russians.

US President Joe Biden responded to these accusations by saying that the Republicans simply do not get what the current foreign policy of the United States is about.

‘This is not only about Ukraine, but about the whole of Eastern Europe and NATO, with grave consequences,’

said Joe Biden.
